“The copyright is like Moscow after the fall of communism; full of empty buildings due to the many permissions needed in order to use them”
ABOUT >
YOU KANT MAX MIX is a collaborative project about recording new remixes on the Max Mix 5. Mix Max is one of the first mixtapes released in Spain -Barcelona- by MAX MUSIC Productions in the 80s. The idea is to use the recording of the first remix tapes released in Spain as the base for new collaborative remixes. If you follow the linkMAX MUSIC Productions you can learn more about the history and the myth of these tapes.
We are working on a original 1987 cassette tape of the MAX MIX 5 which contains a remix audio track of about 28′43 “. The idea is to change the composition of the original MAX MIX 5 bringing new beats, sounds … into the original audio track. In short, it seeks to add new details and music while respecting the manner in which this mixes were elaborated, blurring the notion of authorship in a more collective practice. YOU KANT MAX MIX is a way to think and react about copyright, the new digital media and its gradual and cautious approach towards the more strident “Copyright and Intellectual Property law” modifications which are being instituted in Spain as well as in other european and american countries.
The home of this web is a blog where we gather information which is relevant to the project. So far we have posted both topical issues concerning the conflict of rights management, culture and the remix as an introduction to other musical practices whose economies embody alternatives to the current dominant scheme of musical production and distribution.
This project began in April where first collaborations were initiated in Barcelona. during May and June YKMM moved its base to the Art Production Center EL LEVANTE in Rosario Argentina thanks to a grant given by Can Xalant Center of Contemporary Thought and Practices. In early september the project was presented and discussed in Fine Art Faculty of the Madrid University, in the context of PLAZA 09 congress and wants to keep rolling! At the drop-down menu of the top right side of the page you will find information about the musicians with whom we have started working, you can listen and download some of their inputs in the audio tab as well as the original track from which to start. This project is open to all who choose to participate, download the sounds and remix them!! Yihahhh!
